Questions

Questions people ask us at midnight

If yours isn’t here, call. Asking costs nothing.

The first hours

Someone I love was just arrested. What do I do first?

Write down where they were taken and the booking number if you have it, then call us. Don’t talk about the case on jail phones; those calls are recorded.

Should I talk to the police about what happened?

Give your name, stay polite, and say you want a lawyer before answering questions. That is your right, and using it can’t be held against you.

What happens at the first appearance?

A judge reads the charge, sets bond and the conditions of release. It is short. The defense itself starts after.

Fees

Do you charge for the first call?

No. The first call is to understand what happened and tell you the price. You pay only once you sign the agreement.

What isn’t covered by the flat fee?

Court costs, fines, program fees, experts and state fees. A trial is a second flat fee, quoted before you decide.

Can I pay in monthly payments?

Yes. The payment plan is written into the agreement, and the total doesn’t change.

By video

What do I need for a video meeting?

A phone or computer with a camera, and a private place to talk. We send a link by text; there is nothing to install.

Do you take cases outside Osceola County?

Yes. We meet clients anywhere in the state by video, and appear in person in Osceola, Orange and Polk counties. Elsewhere, we tell you up front how court dates will work.

Work, family, status

Will my employer find out?

Not from us. Court records are public, but many cases end without a conviction, and some can be sealed later.

I’m not a citizen. Should I take a plea?

Not before we check what it means for your status. Some pleas that look small have serious immigration consequences.

Who at the firm speaks Spanish?

Dariela Ybarra and Amadeo Zuleta work in Spanish and English. Leland Renfrow works in English, with Dariela or Amadeo on the call when you prefer Spanish.

Still wondering? Ask a lawyer tonight.

Calls are answered 24/7, in English or Spanish.
